Data to Make your Poultry Sales Profitable

Eggs and poultry are some of the most consumed products in the country. Farmers can build a sustainable operation selling these products directly to their community. It is crucial for your Farm to build a consistent, loyal base of Buyers who want sustainably raised poultry products.

We recently surveyed 35,000+ Buyers to understand their preferences when purchasing pastured poultry (meat and eggs) from a local Farmer. Download the infographic:

Understanding Local Poultry Buyers

Poultry products are regularly consumed in most households. In fact, it is important to 88% of Buyers that their poultry products are sustainably-raised. This means that it is crucial for your Farm to be transparent, and clearly market your practices and values to potential Buyers. Make sure your sustainable practices are clearly marketed on all your packaging, on social media and in newsletters.

It is also crucial to know where your target Buyers live. Of the target potential Buyers willing to pay a premium for your sustainably-raised poultry products, 51% live in a Suburban area. Focus on these areas when choosing delivery and pick-up locations, or Farmers Markets.

Target Buyers who spend more on groceries each month to ensure you can secure cash flow. Create Subscriptions to access recurring orders and repeat Buyers, leading to loyalty.

What to Consider when Selling Eggs

To attract prospective customers, it is important to note the shopping habits of local Buyers when selling eggs. In fact, 59% of households are interested in an egg Subscription for delivery, so your Farm should consider offering a Subscription that will please customers and fit into their schedule.

Buyers will opt-in to a weekly or biweekly Egg Subscription, if fulfillment options are convenient for their household. Offer different Subscription sizes (1 dozen, 2 dozen), to appeal to a variety of Buyers. There are households who purchase more or less eggs each week, so a one-time purchase option may be worthwhile, too.

What to Consider when Selling Chicken

The average household consumes 11.4 servings (11lbs) of chicken each month. However, the top 25% of households eat an average of 57lbs of chicken (10-12 birds) per month. This means that local Buyers may be interested in a poultry Subscription depending on the amount of chicken they consume.

Consider selling Pastured Poultry Bundles with 1-2 chickens every 1-2 weeks. Since 33% of households will buy birds ad hoc, make sure you have birds available for one-time-purchase, too. When selling chicken Subscriptions, offer delivery for a fee to bring convenience to Buyers and an extra stream of cash flow to your Farm. 57% of all households are interested in a chicken Subscription for delivery.

Conclusion

Poultry products are heavily consumed on a consistent basis by households across the country. It is important to understand how much poultry local Buyers consume, and how frequently it is purchased. Offer convenient purchase and fulfillment options for those Buyers to increase your poultry sales.
