Understanding the Components of a Good Farm Logo

At Barn2Door, we know how important a Farmer’s Brand is to attract customers, build loyalty, and establish your Farm as a business. A logo has the power to communicate your Farm’s values, create a connection between you and your customers, and distinguish your Farm from the competition. That’s why we’re introducing Farm Logos as an in-house Barn2Door service.

As a symbol and face of your business and brand, a logo can impact your customers’ behaviors and emotions. In fact, it can take 7 seconds for a customer to make a first impression of your Farm. That’s why it’s essential to use a logo that captures attention and also displays your values.

How can a simple logo convey so much meaning? Through the use of shapes, fonts, and colors. Deciding these factors is more than just picking your favorite color or choosing a font that pops. Your logo should spark feelings of pride for the work you do as you put thought, meaning, and intention behind its creation.

When thinking about a new Farm logo that Barn2Door will design on your behalf, here are important things to consider:

The Shape

The most iconic logos use different shapes that everyone recognizes — think of Apple, John Deere, Nike, and Starbucks. Each uses different shapes, colors, and fonts to convey their company and brand. When determining your Farm logo, it’s a natural first step to start with the shape.

  • Geometric Shapes. Circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, and lines all fit within this category. With a simple and distinct structure, geometric logos are typically chosen for symmetry. Think Adidas and Target.

  • Natural Shapes. Also called free-form and organic, these shapes mimic what’s seen in nature– think trees, flowers, leaves, etc. John Deere and Puma both use animal silhouettes for their logos. These are typically symbolic and representative of the brand.

  • Abstract Shapes. Logos that use an abstract form generate curiosity and usually combine the use of geometric shapes and natural shapes. Think AirBnB, Pepsi, or Under Armor. These are typically more modern designs, they don’t follow the same rules as geometric shapes.

The Font(s)

Some logos use shapes and fonts, while others merge the two – think Amazon, Cabela’s, FedEx, and UPS. Choosing the right font for your logo can make it stand out and create brand recognition for your Farm. The next step when thinking about the design of your logo is to determine if you want to include text.

  • A Font should Compliment the Logo Shape. Because a logo is used across a variety of different parts of your business - website, social media, packaging, branding, etc. - it’s important that the font matches your Farms identity. Think of it like a nametag for your business! A single font should be used to display your Farm name, abbreviation, or acronym.

The Color(s)

The colors you include in your logo have the power to improve brand recognition by up to 80%. Colors evoke different emotions and feelings, so it’s important to get it right! Start by listing colors that represent your brand and messaging. Brands choose their colors based on how they want to appear. (e.g. Brown is affiliated with UPS, Red is affiliated with Target).

To start, understand your brand values. What do you want your buyers to know about your Farm at first glance? For example, if you have no idea what John Deere is, the use of green leads one to believe the company works with nature, whereas yellow is a friendly color, but also associated with construction (hard hats!) and equipment.

Here’s a quick summary of what certain colors mean and the feelings associated with them:

  • Red: Energy and passion

  • Orange: Playful, creativity, enthusiasm

  • Yellow: Happiness and hope

  • Green: Nature, harmony, stability

  • Blue: Trustworthy, calm, intelligent

  • Purple: Mysterious, luxurious

  • Pink: Playful, romantic

  • Brown: Wholesome, warmth, honesty

  • Black: Elegance, sophisticated

  • White: Minimalism and simplicity

Because a logo should be kept simple, it’s essential that only two main colors are used. If you want to use more, we recommend choosing 1-2 tints or tones of the main colors to add definition.

Determining each element of your logo is essential to building brand loyalty and trust among your customers. Choosing a shape that reflects your Farm’s values, a font that identifies the name of your Farm, and a color combination that determines your brand’s identity is essential to building a strong brand for your Farm.
