Last Spring, we sat down with Valerie Luhman of Grass Fed Cattle Co to learn more about her experience scaling her Farm business and how implementing a streamlined ordering and delivery system has contributed to their growth. Recently, we caught up with Valerie to see how the Farm has evolved and get the scoop on how she and her husband Jared have made Grass Fed Cattle Co their own.

Located in Ely, Iowa, Dan and Debbie’s Creamery is an extension of their family-owned Dairy Farm. The Creamery takes milk from the Farm and turns it into high-quality dairy products, selling it directly to consumers through their online and retail stores.

Thomas Bennett raises non-GMO, antibiotic-free pork and poultry in southeastern Michigan. Dedicated to implementing the highest standards of animal welfare, sustainability, and humane practices, animals on Bennett Farms live low-stress, happy lives, exercising their natural behaviors.

In 2000, County Line Harvest began with six acres of farmland on the Sonoma-Marin County line. Today, they have grown to over 30 acres in Northern California and over 100 acres in Southern California, growing produce through the winter season.

Back in Spring 2020 we sat down with Grant Sheeder of Sheeder Cloverleaf Dairy to share his story of transitioning to direct to consumer sales paired with direct delivery. He found great success with marketing his door-to-door milk delivery service on social media and has continued to grow his operations through 2020. We recently caught up with Grant to see how his dairy business has evolved after moving online with Barn2Door.

In January 2020, we spoke with Jessica Evans of Evans Family Farm to learn more about her experience transitioning their Farm to online direct to market sales. Our initial conversation occurred well ahead of the pandemic. Recently, we caught up with Jessica to get the scoop on how her Farm business has navigated the past year.

In 2016, Ash and Ben Clark purchased 68 acres of Farm land in West Chazy, NY. Sacred Roots Maple is a family Farm rooted in keeping maple traditions alive. Their story is rich in history. In fact, many of the maple trees have been in constant production since the 1800s. What started as a passion project for Ben, quickly grew into a thriving family business. Ben has actually been involved in sugaring for 20 plus years. He started as a young teen, working on the same Farm with the original owner --- learning about the property, how to tend the trees, and the process of producing syrup.

Joelle and Jared Orem run Orem Farms, a 40-acre family Farm located in Northeast Indiana. Jared is a fourth generation Farmer who was raised to grow food, he knows how to work the land and produce quality crops. Joelle has a background in marketing and events with a Bachelor’s Degree in Design from Indiana Wesleyan University; she is a creative thinker with a heart for family, farming, and her local community. Together, their well rounded skills have enabled them to grow the family business.

Agricola Family Farm grows and sells organic produce to customers in Cleveland, TX, though they first farmed together an ocean away. Daphne Bicaise joined Barn2Door’s DIRECT Farm Series: Brand Conference to share how she folded their family Farm’s unique story as refugees into their Brand efforts, and how those relationships shifted online during the pandemic.

Angelica Hayton is the 5th generation on Hayton Farms and owner of Hayton Farms Berries, a well-known presence in and around Seattle farmers markets. When covid disrupted sales and re-wrote market expectations for managers and customers alike, Angelica jumped online. Here’s how she successfully transitioned to pre-purchasing, direct home delivery and online brand efforts in a summer.

Dirty Girl Produce is a Certified Organic Farm outside of Santa Cruz, California. They’re well known in the area for their top-tier produce, strawberries and tomatoes. Serving some of the largest markets and well-known restaurants in San Francisco, owner Joe Schirmer shared how they transitioned their long-standing buyer relationships online this summer to keep sales steady despite shutdowns and shifting demand.

Luke and Caitlin started Provision Family Farms after hearing Joel Salatin lecture about small, direct-to-market Farms. That was 8 years ago, and now the West Michigan Farm is raising grass fed beef, lamb, pastured pork and chicken which they sell direct-to-market online for home delivery. They’ve stayed ahead of consumers shifting expectations and have continued to grow through the pandemic.

Lucky Crow Farm cultivates three plots in Monmouth and Salem, Oregon. Founder Eden Olsen launched the Farm in 2016, after studying sustainable agriculture at Scripps College, managing farmers markets in the Bay Area, ranching in California and growing organic produce in Washington. Beginning with CSA and farmers’ market sales, the female-powered farm expanded to serve restaurants last year and began online sales this season. Eden shared her passion for farming and building community relationships—and how she’s engaging buyers online as well.

In 1996, Grant Sheeder’s father left his salaried job with benefits to start milking cows. Despite being called crazy, the dairy grew and in 2005 Grant’s mother joined her husband full time on the Farm. In 2006, the couple began processing their own milk, and started selling grass-based dairy products through local stores. Grant joined the successful family business. Recently, in part due to the pandemic, Grant and his parents decided to test interest in direct home delivery, and experienced a surge in growth and positive customer feedback. After attending college for horticulture in Germany, Petra Zinniker wrote to the Biodynamic Association, asking about opportunities for hands-on experience working with an organic Farm in the states. On the Member List she received was Zinniker Family Farms, where she landed an internship, met her husband, and spent her life working on one of the oldest biodynamic Farms in the country. Petra graciously shared her story, the Farm’s history, and their experience selling direct to customers.

Jesse’s great-grandfather immigrated to America in 1883 at age 11; he was the second settler to the Trout Lake, WA, region. An early homesteader and Farmer, his great grandfather raised dairy cows and crafted butter. Today, Jesse with his wife (also from an agricultural family), children and parents continue the family farming tradition and sell raw milk, beef and eggs to their local community.

Joe grew up on his family farm and shortly after high school, began farming full time with his dad at McCabe Family Farms, located 30 miles south of Rochester, MN. They have a cow-calf operation and raised pastured pork and grain-finished beef to sell direct to market. Joe always had a passion for agriculture and raising animals.

John Montgomery, his wife, son and nephew live full, active lives at Chestnut Ridge Farms. They share it abundantly—selling beef, pork and a healthy lifestyle to their local Virginia community. John described how their lifestyle and philosophy connects with local buyers, and why and how they prioritize convenience as a way to ensure loyalty and a growing business.
